Violinist Hong-Yi Mo joined the Detroit Symphony Orchestra at beginning of 2008-2009 Season. Prior to joining the DSO, Mr. Mo studied with New York Philharmonic Concertmaster Glenn Dicterow and Associate Principle Lisa Kim at the Manhattan School of Music Orchestral Program and received his Bachelor’s in Music from Oberlin Conservatory, and his Master’s in music from Yale University. Originally from China, Mr. Mo was the second prize winner of the China National Junior Violin Competition in 1994, and was winner of the 3rd National Invitational Violin Competition at the Central Conservatory of Music in 1997.
As both a soloist and chamber musician, he recorded a string quartet version of Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” for China Central TV station and the China National Radio. In 1999, he gave the premiere performance of Chang-Yuan Liu’s Violin Concerto “Psalm” with the Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra, and China National Youth Orchestra, and the recording was released in the same year by Beijing Global Audio-Visual Publishing House. Mr. Mo has performed at several festivals including the Casalmaggiore International Festival, the Music Academy of the West in 2002 and Bowdoin International Music Festival, and he had served as concertmaster at the China National Youth Orchestra, Oberlin Conservatory Contemporary Ensemble, Manhattan Chamber Sinfonia, and Manhattan Symphony. In February 2008, Mr. Mo led the Manhattan Chamber Sinfonia collaborated with Pinchas Zukerman in the performance in Carnegie Hall, collaborated also with Kurt Masur Conducting Seminar as a section leader of Manhattan Symphony, and later was invited to give solo performance at the U.S. Embassy in the Dominican Republic.
