In the 1st century BC, the fabled riches of Dacia, present-day Romania, became
irresistible to the expanding Roman Empire. It took Rome, under Trajan,
two wars to vanquish them and establish colonies that were integrated
into the Empire and cleared the path for a series of historic events
that led at last to the development of the modern Romanian people.
