
Paul Wingert, cello
Cellist Paul Wingert is a native Detroiter who joined the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in December 1979. Previously, he was a member of the cello section of the Toledo Symphony Orchestra. He attended Cass Technical High School and received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan. When not performing with the DSO, Paul is active as a chamber music recitalist. He collaborates with numerous DSO musicians to present concerts throughout the metropolitan area. He has also performed as a soloist with numerous community orchestras.
Paul regularly serves as a music coach in area high schools. He also teaches cello privately. Additionally, he founded the DSO Civic String Quartet and has served as one of the coaches since 1996.
When Paul is not pursuing musical endeavors, he enjoys attending baseball games and is an avid gardener. In addition, he is handy with the hammer, and has built an attached greenhouse to his home so he is able to enjoy gardening all year round. Paul has a special interest in growing and breeding Bromeliad plants. He has registered more than 25 of his own hybrids to date. His competitive entries at the 2004 World Bromeliad Conference earned him the prestigious Sweepstakes Award. He has been engaged as a guest speaker by garden clubs from Port Huron to Chicago.
